Apr 17, 2024

In an era where the stewardship of natural resources and the leadership within those domains are more crucial than ever, the national State Park Leadership School (SPLS) has marked a remarkable achievement at the Oglebay National Training Center in Wheeling, WV. The latest session saw a record turnout, underscoring the growing recognition and importance of the program in shaping the future of park management and conservation leadership.

A Gathering of Visionaries

Capped at an enrollment of 162, the program witnessed an enthusiastic participation from state park leaders across 41 states, a testament to its national appeal and the high regard in which it is held within the community. The diversity of experiences and perspectives brought together at SPLS not only enriches the learning environment but also fosters a unique networking of professionals dedicated to the conservation and enjoyment of America's natural wonders.

The Board of Regents and faculty deserve an ovation for their exceptional work in orchestrating a curriculum that is both informative and transformative. Through their dedication, participants were immersed in a range of experiences and insights that not only challenged their understanding but also inspired them to reach for new heights in their professional journeys.

Accolades and Acknowledgments

Special congratulations are in order for Jeff Davis, the Texas State Park Superintendent for Dinosaur Valley State Park, who achieved top scholastic honors in the two-year certificate program offered in collaboration with N.C. State University's Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management (PRTM). His academic excellence sets a high bar for future cohorts.

Equally commendable is Danielle Schneider, Regional Operations Manager in Vermont, who was chosen by her peers as the class representative. Her compelling remarks at the commencement banquet captured the spirit of the program, echoing the aspirations and commitments of her fellow graduates.

Special recognition is also extended to Kelly Farrell, Arkansas; Donald Forgione, Florida; Priscilla Geigis, Massachusetts; and Craig Seaver, Virginia; who completed their 3-year term on the Board of Regents and quality instruction as SPLS faculty. Bylaws require a break in service to continue to serve on the Board of Regents.

Since its inception in 2008, SPLS has welcomed 966 participants from 49 states and 4 Canadian provinces, a clear indicator of its expansive reach and impact. This year was notably enriched by the presence of first-time participants from Illinois and New York, expanding the school's geographic diversity and inclusivity.

The anticipation is already building for the 17th SPLS, scheduled for January 5 - 9, 2025. As the program continues to evolve, it remains a beacon for those seeking to serve, lead, and inspire within the realm of park management and conservation.

Serve, Lead, Inspire!

The mantra of the State Park Leadership School is more than just a motto; it's a call to action. As we look ahead to the future of parks and recreation management, the SPLS stands as a pillar of excellence, shaping leaders who are as passionate about the natural world as they are skilled in safeguarding it for generations to come.
