Apr 17, 2024

Dear Colleagues,

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the retirement of our esteemed colleague, Tom Tyler, as Director of Connecticut State Parks, effective April 1st, 2024. Tom's exceptional leadership and dedication have significantly impacted the Connecticut state park system, leaving an enduring legacy that will be cherished for years to come.

Tom's journey in public service began as a seasonal law enforcement ranger in the spring of 1982, marking the start of a remarkable career spanning over four decades. Throughout his nearly 15-year tenure as Director, Tom's unwavering commitment and visionary leadership have been instrumental in shaping the state park system and guiding it through numerous challenges and triumphs.

Under Tom's guidance, the Connecticut state parks system has thrived, achieving milestones and garnering recognition for its excellence. Tom's leadership played a pivotal role in tripling the average term of service for a state park director, a testament to his dedication and enduring impact.

His contributions have been celebrated by Governor Lamont, who recently honored Tom's service with a proclamation (attached), acknowledging his profound influence on the Constitution State's park system. Tom's ability to see the big picture and advocate for the long-term public benefit of his decisions has left an indelible mark on Connecticut's natural landscapes and recreational opportunities. At a recent retirement gathering, Mike Lambert, Connecticut DEEP Bureau Chief of Outdoor Recreation, who worked with Tom for more than 10 years, spoke of the successes and traits that could be attributed to Tom. Those included the Passport to Parks Program legislation that provided more budget certainty each year for park operations and free park access to Connecticut citizens, the Silver Sands beachfront complex and several other accomplishments. Chief Lambert noted Tom’s strong work ethic, and for being a determined advocate for the men and women who operate the parks.

In a recent message, Tom expressed his gratitude for the invaluable support and camaraderie he has experienced within the National Association of State Park Directors (NASPD) leadership and community. His sentiment underscores the importance of collaboration and shared knowledge among park leaders across the nation.

As Tom embarks on this new chapter of his life, we extend our heartfelt appreciation for his tireless dedication and exemplary service. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us as we uphold the mission of preserving and enhancing our nation's natural treasures.

We welcome Jeremy Hall, Assistant Director for State Park Operations, who will serve as Acting State Park Director during the transition period. Jeremy's leadership and expertise will ensure the continued success of Connecticut State Parks as the recruitment process for a permanent director moves forward.

Congratulations to Tom on a well-deserved retirement and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
