June marks America’s official Great Outdoors Month! In recent years it has been sanctioned by a proclamation signed by the President and all 50 State Governors. In support of this celebration, the President and several State Governors began hosting Capital Campouts.
Thousands of kids and their families have participated in memorable camping experiences. It is sure to spark a passion for the great outdoors in individuals who would otherwise never have the opportunity to enjoy such an adventure.
The purpose of the Campouts is to expose youth in urban areas to the world of camping while also giving an opportunity for governors to show their support for the parks.
Many of the Campouts focus on fourth graders, supporting the Every Kid in a Park initiative. This venture attempts to draw four million 4th graders to a state or national park for a day of fun in hopes to plant seeds for a lifelong love of nature and practice of making smart and healthy choices with the use of free time.
Immersion in the precious lands that state parks protect across America is every generation’s birthright. Fortunately, programs like Capital Campouts and the dedication of America’s State Parks partnering with other agencies make this opportunity available and easily attainable.
Capital Campouts aim to demonstrate the accessibility we all have to the great outdoors. Camping proposes a connection to nature, fun and healthy recreation and an alternative to media-centered living for a brief time! These campouts offer youth and family exposure to outdoor adventure as well as traditional camping activities including hiking, fishing, horseback riding, campfire songs, s’mores and more!
