Candlelight hikes return to Minnesota parks and trails
Dec 30, 2025
Minnesotans are invited to enjoy winter nights outdoors during a series of candlelight hikes, snowshoe outings and cross-country ski events planned at state parks and trails across Minnesota.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is hosting 20 candlelight events at 17 locations between Jan. 1 and Feb. 28, featuring luminary-lit trails open for hiking, snowshoeing or skiing, depending on snow conditions.
“Candlelight events are visitor favorites every year and celebrate the beauty of Minnesota in winter,” said Ann Pierce, Parks and Trails Division director with the DNR.
Events are family-friendly, and some parks offer snowshoe or ski rentals at ranger stations or visitor centers. Visitors are encouraged to call ahead to confirm equipment availability.
Nearby and regional events include Gateway State Trail on Jan. 23, Mille Lacs Kathio State Park on Jan. 31, and Afton State Park on Feb. 7. Other participating locations include Itasca, Gooseberry Falls, Wild River and Lake Bemidji state parks, among others.
While candlelight events are free, a state park vehicle permit is required. Permits cost $7 for a daily pass or $35 for a year-round pass and can be purchased in advance through the DNR. Skiers age 16 and older must also have a Great Minnesota Ski Pass for events that allow skiing.
In the event of severe weather, visitors should check park websites or contact park offices for updates.
