The Department of Natural Resources is dedicated to the preservation, protection, effective management and maintenance of Wisconsin’s natural resources. The Fish, Wildlife & Parks Division is seeking a Natural Resources Manager to serve as lead manager for Park and Recreation programs. This position is located in beautiful downtown Madison, WI.

We are seeking a leader and strategist in developing, directing, acquiring, and promoting the statewide parks and outdoor recreation program for the State of Wisconsin.
Job Duties:   The purpose of this position is developing, directing, acquiring, and promoting the statewide parks and outdoor recreation program for the State of Wisconsin. The position advises and supports the Division Administrator and other members of the Department Leadership Team in ensuring coordinated recreational policies throughout the state.  This position represents the department by serving on and/or working with public and other external groups involved in the promotion of outdoor recreation.  These include but are not limited to elected officials, environmental groups, the tourism industry, National Parks Service, U.S. Forest Service, and the National Association of State Park Directors, recreation user organizations. Oversee bureau operations which include the establishment of annual program objectives, budgeting , work planning, customer surveys, staffing needs, legislative requests, administrative code changes, and strategic and master planning initiatives. The Bureau Director also works with other land management organizations to manage park lands using principles of ecosystem management and landscape-scale planning to ensure the preservation of ecological, geographic and scenic heritage of the parks.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

  • Technical knowledge of parks and recreational as it relates to the development and management of public park and outdoor recreation programs.

  • Strategic leadership experience and skills in the field of Parks and Recreation or other natural resources management area.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others toward accomplishment of a shared goal.

  • Applied business management skills within an operation that has size, scope, and complexity comparable to that of Wisconsin State Parks system.

  • Principles of effective supervision.

  • Principles of effective team management.

  • Principles of effective communication

  • Program management skills
