Job Responsibilities

Hunting Island is South Carolina’s single most popular state park, attracting more than a million visitors a year, as well as a vast array of land and marine wildlife. Five miles of pristine South Carolina beaches, thousands of acres of marsh and maritime forest, a saltwater lagoon and ocean inlet are all part of the park’s natural allure.

Job Purpose and Duties:

Under general supervision, assists with overall operation and maintenance of a State Park. Performs diversified duties as governed by general instruction, policies and standard operating procedures of the Department. Assumes the responsibilities of the Park Manager in the absence of higher level employees.

1) Assists with park administrative duties in accordance with department guidelines and procedures and planning of long and short-term goals.
2) Collect and account for revenue and produce required reports.
3) Instruct, supervise and perform routine and preventative maintenance on grounds, buildings, and equipment to meet established standards. Maintains a safe work environment.
4) Manages assigned specific operations to include public use areas, retail operations and facilities.
5) Performs law enforcement activities with in his/her authority and established policy.
6) Performs duties relative to assisting to manage St. Phillips Island operation.
7) Interprets the cultural and natural resources of the State Park Service to park visitors.
8) Employee will be required to live in designated park housing to provide for security, safety and emergency response.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State preferred qualifications: A high school diploma and experience as a handyman or park ranger. Agency preferred qualifications: Associate degree in Park Management or related field with two (2) years park ranger experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements:

Position requires medium to heavy lifting, walking, standing on uneven terrain, crawling and working at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, cleaning agents, and other material used in maintaining park facilities and grounds. Ability to work flexible work schedule including nights, weekends and holidays. Position requires residency in agency provided housing.
